What the interior design year 2019 will bring

Long before the year is over, we study the trends to come to ensure that we build homes that are always timely for our customers.

Long before the year is over, we study the trends to come to ensure that we build homes that are always timely for our customers. We spend a great deal of time designing and reviewing each and every home to find the optimal solutions for the relevant buyer group. We do this so that our buyers get the most out of their new home, not only in terms of trends, but also so that the home is solved in the best possible way for the individual property and their new owners. We therefore work continuously to look at future trends, technologies and what is happening in the market. Here are some interior design trends we see for 2019:

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH COLOURS AND MATERIALS

The newest interior design trend is surrounded by warm, earthy and neutral colours. In recent years, grey has dominated the neutral interior palette, but now sand nuances are back, and prove to be anything but boring. Don't misunderstand us, we love grey, but we have found ourselves increasingly drawn to the warmer, friendlier tones of oatmeal and linen. Think of the words earth, canvas, wool, wood and hemp, cashmere – everything sounds far better than beige. We have also for many years painted our ceilings white, but in 2019, painting ceilings in a colour other than white will appear prominently in Norwegian homes. We also see that light pastel colours will be used more as the new neutral colours instead of today's white.

The dark colours will hold for another year, they will remain deep and warm. Norwegians have become bolder in recent years, so in 2019 we will probably see people experimenting even more with colours, and people will to a greater extent show their personality and identity through colour choices.

Green, we believe, will still be 2019's hottest colour. Generally natural colours together with matt black and details in high gloss will be seen in many homes. It is not certain that all walls will be painted in colour, but many will probably replace the grey cushions and the grey floor rug with something in colour. This is one of the advantages of choosing a neutral colour palette on fixed fittings, and instead using loose fittings to follow the trends, it can easily be changed to be timely.

Metal, such as gold and brass, is still confirmed as important materials in the interior picture, together with patterns and textures such as marble and terrazzo. But everything comes together in a completely new environment that is softer, lighter and toned down.

ORGANIC FURNISHING

When it comes to interior design and furniture, this will be softer than before. We will have more organic and rounded shapes, together with natural materials such as leather, stone and glass. Leather in cognac colour on furniture will be one of the hottest trends we will see on furniture in 2019. Furniture designers will focus more on practical, flexible and simply arranged furniture that can create a dynamic lifestyle. Marble remains trendy on the design scene, although some are inspired to find a more informal and simple way to use this famous and luxurious material. The year 2019 will also be the year when we can bring out the old chest from great-grandmother that has been gathering dust in the attic – this goes back again to showing identity and personality in one's own home – old things from the attic or flea market will help create an individuality that many now wish to achieve.

Dark wood will also appear more strongly in the interior picture in 2019. Previously, light wood has characterised the Nordic style, but we believe this will now change. Generally, wood will appear more prominently, not only on floors as it has been for quite some time.

Dark kitchens in black and dark blue, together with matt black details came in full force in 2018, and will absolutely continue into 2019. But here one should be careful if one chooses to go for a dark kitchen in one's new home – a kitchen is something one does not change as often as one can change cushions, and therefore not as easy to change if the trends change. Dark kitchens also take up a great deal of space in a room, so be careful that the room will not appear small because one has installed a dark kitchen. But with that said, we love dark kitchens, and you will see this in our projects that will go on sale in 2019.

SAY HELLO TO TERRAZZO

We see that the popularity of mid-20th century design shows no signs of slowing down, and then it comes as no surprise that terrazzo surfaces are going to have a big influence on interior design trends in 2019. Terrazzo is a composite material consisting of marble, quartz, granite and glass – together this becomes a playful surface. We will see this material in all rooms and on all surfaces in 2019.

GEOMETRY IN FASHION

Geometric patterns have probably never really been 'out', but the reason we believe this will be right in 2019 is that it can easily be introduced to even the smallest rooms and give it identity. Warm minimalism has been in vogue for a long time, but now we are entering an era where we shall combine minimalism with identity and personality. We want more life in each room.

Large geometric prints will also be seen on furniture, cushions, rugs, curtains and other textiles. We will also see wallpaper with larger motifs, and people will not be afraid of prints on large wall surfaces.

RAW MATERIALS AND ENVIRONMENTAL MENTALITY

Recently we have become more conscious of the environment, and this also affects interiors. From using natural materials such as marble in smart ways, to energy-saving appliances, to living plant walls – we are now even more concerned with taking less and giving more back to nature. This is reflected in more reuse, more antiques and more identity in each home. It is no longer important to buy new, but more important to find new homes for already existing things. A new coat of paint on an old shelf, or a new fabric on grandmother's armchair will absolutely be shown in 2019's trend picture.

We at Bonum look forward to showing you many new and exciting projects in 2019, and with that we wish you a happy Christmas and a happy New Year.
